Understanding Your Immune System in 5 Minutes

In this day and age, it is more important than ever to maintain a wholesome lifestyle with a strong immune system at its base. Only with a strong immune system can the body better fight off viruses, bacteria and help prevent illnesses during this pandemic.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, qi is the flow of energy that sustains all life forms, both externally in the environment, and internally in the body. It is essential to restore the balance of qi to the whole body to prevent illnesses from arising.

How does our immune system work and why is it important?

Our immune system is made up of a complex network of cells and proteins that constantly defends your body against invading pathogens, including viruses, toxins, and bacteria. This is especially important now as the pandemic consists of a novel pathogen, which means that we do not have existing antibodies to mount a defence₁. Only a strong immune system can help attack and clear out the virus, and also create a memory for future infections.

Different parts of the complex immune system include white blood cells, antibodies, and the spleen. They each play a different role in maintaining the body’s natural defences – the white blood cells look for and attack foreign invaders (microbes) whilst the spleen makes disease-fighting components of the immune system, removes microbes, and destroys old or damaged red blood cells.

How should I boost my immune system?

People with a weaker immune system are more prone to diseases such as autoimmune disorders and digestive issues. Symptoms such as cold hands, diarrhoea, fatigue, and aching joints may also suggest a weak immunity.

Besides maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can also boost your immune system naturally through a diet rich in immunity-boosting nutrients. For both kids and adults, it is recommended to consume foods that are high in vitamins such as:

  • Vitamin C: oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, and spinach
  • Vitamin B6: chicken, salmon, tuna, bananas, green vegetables, and potatoes (with skin)
  • Vitamin E: almonds, sunflower and safflower oil, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, and spinach

Traditional Chinese Medicine supplements such as 汇补精 and 人参 are also suitable for building a stronger immune system due to the herbs used. It can help to invigorate our lungs and spleen to build our immunity and defend against the attack of “foreign” invaders.
